Barley

Barley n - A tall grasslike plant with dense bristly flower spikes, widely cultivated for grain

Barley provides good quality cereal silage over a considerably short season. It is best suited when crops are planted later in spring and where soils are expected to be very dry in early summer. The silage quality is very good due to the high grain content. Barley is planted in spring for whole-crop silage. It matures quicker than triticale, so becomes the preferred species when crops cannot be planted until mid to late-spring, or in dryland climates.
