MaizeMaize n - High production crop that can be grown for grain, greenfeed, or for silage
Maize is currently grown in most regions of New Zealand. It is frost susceptible and therefore is most safely planted when the risk of frost has passed. The maize plant is an efficient converter of sunlight, nutrients and water into plant material. It has the ability to produce high dry matter yields and performs well under dry conditions. Feeding supplement such as Maize silage can reduce some of the risk of pasture based dairy farming. The climate can present many challenges where traditional pastures are the only source of feed. These challenges can have a serious impact on milk production (income), and cow health. Feeding supplements such as Maize silage can help to even out these seasonal feed fluctuations. Maize assists in maintaining and building cow condition, fills seasonal feed shortages created by climatic conditions and complements feed quality of a pasture diet.
