Oats

Oats n - A hard cereal grown as food. Oats, the edible grain of this cereal

Oats are an ideal option for winter feed when sowing in dry autumn conditions as it can be sown deeper and later than Ryegrass. Oats can also germinate in relatively cold soils compared with Ryegrass. It is an ideal crop to plant in early spring after winter crops have been grazed, enabling high quality green chop silage to be harvested before planting another crop or pasture in late spring. They can either be grazed or taken as green chop silage - careful grazing can provide multiple grazes. Oats can be overcome with disease if attempting to take through to whole crop. In this instance Triticale or barley will be a better option.
