Sorghum

Sorghum n - A grass grown for grain, greenfeed, silage and as a source of syrup

Forage Sorghums have the potential to produce a large body of feed under a wide range of soil and seasonal conditions. Forage sorghum is relatively drought tolerant and has the potential to utilize sub soil moisture reserves and is frost sensitive. It is comparatively easy to establish, although an investment in good seed beds and sowing techniques will result in superior plant establishment and higher productivity. Like most plants, the feed value of Forage Sorghum is highest when the plant is young. However due to the perceived risk of prussic acid poisoning grazing is often delayed until the plants become tall and considered safe.

Under certain conditions forage crops, including Sorghums, can contain compounds which may have an adverse effect on stock health and performance. The two most common toxic compounds are prussic acid and nitrate. Under normal conditions these do not represent a danger to stock and simple precautions can be taken to avoid the risk of poisoning.
