Triticale

Triticale n - A forage cereal grown for both grazing and silage production

Triticale is grown for silage because of its high forage production within short periods. This allows farmers to produce high quality silage at an economic cost which is ideal for complementing high quality pasture or Brassica crops or supplementing when pasture growth or quality is low. Some varieties can be autumn planted, providing winter grazings and whole crop silage. Other varieties can be early spring planted behind winter grazed Brassicas, these crops are taken through to whole crop silage. It can also be harvested at an earlier stage (green chop) before seed heads are present giving a silage of similar value to high quality grass silage. Triticale has higher disease resistance than other cereals such as barley, wheat and oats.
