What is endophyte?
A fungus living within the plant to help protect it.
How does it protect the plant?
It prevents insects from eating the plant and at certain times during the year it can prevent animals from eating it.
How do I know if my grass seed I have purchased has active endophyte or not?
Excellent question. All seed sold with endophyte should have had a recent endophyte test taken and this will be available on request. Always ask for the test and always check that it is no older than 6 months old. The test should show at least 70% endophyte infection. Any grass under 70% endophyte infection should not be sold other than as nil endophyte.
Main points to note on Endophyte:
- Clearly ascertain your requirement for endophyte i.e. what to use and why.
- Check the endophyte status on seed at the time of purchasing to ensure correct endophyte level
- Store seed out of sunlight in a cool dry place prior to sowing.
